JPSI Marriage Seminar Program
Our marriage enrichment seminars for incarcerated families have been a resounding success. JPSI's Marriage Enrichment Seminar #10 that was presented at the Federal Prison Camp, Allenwood, Pennsylvania is now history. From the evaluation sheets completed and returned by the participants, it was a resounding success. Then too, reports from participating facilitators reiterate the positive feedback received from the prisoners and their life-mates. Counselors who coordinated the seminar advised that this particular group really concentrated on the task at hand and got more accomplished, as a group, than at any of the nine previous events.
At this juncture, well over one hundred couples have availed themselves of JPSI's unique Marriage Enrichment Seminars. We are pleased to report that we know of only two couples from this group that have become divorced. On the other hand, we know of four specific marriages that were saved, and many, many more that were benefited. It is important to note that, as a general rule, a high percentage of marriages do not survive the difficult conditions that result from one of the partners being handed a long prison term.
Looking to the near and distant future, our goal is to bring this family-sustaining presentation to Jewish couples in other corrections facilities. To date, that desire has met with less than an enthusiastic reception from each of the chaplains I have contacted. Nonetheless, the MES machinery is now in motion and future seminars at other sites should soon become a reality
At our recent happening, Rabbi Mac Portal administered a renewal of vows to all the couples. Unfortunately, it had to be done quite quickly, since the good rabbi rushed over from his home where he was packing to leave for an extended trip to Israel. Nonetheless, the renewal of vows came across as a fitting and memorable finale to the intense, two-day event.
